Lavinia Fuksas and AdMater – “volcanic” jewels, proudly made in Italy

Lavinia, the daughter of one of the world’s most admired architects. From Bocconi university, globetrotter and jewellery designer for the collection AdMater in collaboration with Alessandro Grimoldieu. Jewels made by precious metals that seem to be born from earth and fire. Let us discover together about it in the interview of Lavinia Fuksas.

What do you see in your creations that reflects your father?

The perfect balance between shape and substance, in which material prevails, and the harmonic way the drawing follows. Then I see his character, strong in appearance, the classic iron hand but in a velvet glove, amazingly sweet but still very strong.

AdMater. A name that recalls the maternal creation, a sort of journey to the motherland with a classic profile. Can you tell us about it?

AdMater was born less than a year ago, with the will to pay homage to my mother, to demonstrate to her and to the world that even if young, determined and “daughter of”, I am capable of doing something off my own back.

I saw the official photos of your jewellery; it looks like if they are delicately lying on a layer of volcanic earth, creating an incredible contrast. I thought about the island of Stromboli, wild and exclusive. Did I have the right impression?

Let us say that yours is a correct impression, during my infancy I spent my summers in the Eolie islands, especially in Filicudi. Now I usually spend my holidays in Pantelleria but exactly at Stromboli, my parents used to take my sisters and I for a swim in those deep night blue waters, making us overcome the fear deep waters. One day I remember a boat was berthed to close to shore and was hit by a rock with an astonishing force, a force that only nature has. It was one of those days that you will forever remember. The thing I like the most about those lands is the erosion of rocks, and it is what I try to emulate with the jewellery, some way making them look “consumed”.

How much Italy is there in the production and in the geometry almost architectonic of your jewels? Can you introduce us Alessandro?

AdMater is a Made in Italy from every point of view, Alessando Grimoldieu is a master in handicraft, he produces every piece by hand, and with love. Ours is an honest relationship, collaborative, based on a common passion that we consider pure beauty, creation in its every declination.

Lavinia, we are both Bocconians and young entrepreneurs. What does our university represent in the development of this project? In addition, what advice would you give to who wants to create a brand and doesn’t know where to start?

For me, coming from Bocconi does not have any impact on this phase of my life. I live of creativity and inspiration, far away from the academic idea of a university like the Bocconi. Mine was a choice made in a time when I was very confused, perhaps the only helpful thing in the realization of this project was the fact of just wanting to estrange as much as possible from a “framed” concept of life to let me go to the poetry of things. It is an amazing university, I would start it all over again but it is far away from our collection. The only advice I can give, since me my self am at the beginning of the path, is to not be afraid to take risks, and make a change. Do not give up
