Sirmione is located on a peninsula that extends for about 4 km on Lake Garda, and is an important cultural centre. The small town is famous for the charm of its historic centre, but also for the Catullo Thermal Baths, for the church of Santa Maria Maggiore and for the ruins of the Roman villa of the famous Latin poet, Catullus, known as La Grotta di Catullo. The Castello degli Scaligeri is another important building, with its typical swallowtail battlements, built for protection and in defensive purposes.
