8. The underground tombs of the Ospedale Maggiore
In the 15th century, the current seat of the University of Milan, built at the behest of the Sforza family, was actually a hospital, the first and largest in the city. At that time, those who died in the hospital were not buried in a normal cemetery, but in a special place, the Sepolcreto. What was originally a small ossuary became bigger and bigger in time, until it reached its current dimensions: a real labyrinth of catacombs that extends in the underground where you can touch history, a real secret jewel hidden beneath the city.
