9. The secret cloister of Casa Ucelli of Nemi
Between Sant’Ambrogio and Carrobbio, at number 7 of Via Cappuccio, inside the perimeter of the ancient city walls, there’s the Chiostro delle Umiliate. This beautiful space belonged to the monastery of Santa Maria Maddalena al Cerchio and was saved by the Ucelli di Nemi family, who bought the entire complex in 1914. On the back, then, there are still ancient plants, the last survivors of the great monastery gardens that now are long gone. Already at the time of Napoleon, the cloister had been heavily modified but the Ucelli family brought it back to its former glory, turning it into one of the hidden gems of the city, far from the flow of tourists.
